Vishal, continued his trademark in Thamirabarani too. Hari netted the family bonding with the help of Vishal as major portion of the film highlighted sentiments and family bonding which was not new to Tamil cinema. Vishal seems very comfortable in acting in Village Subject because from Sandakozhi to Thamirabarani, Vishal is always interested in family subjects with 2% Sentiment & 98% Action. Director Hari has brought huge film cast like Prabu, Nasser, Rohini, Manorama and Nadhiya to rescue the film, from going down.
Regarding the story, Bharani(Vishal) thunderous, brave man with lot of love towards his family. Bharani and his mother (Rohini) live with Saravanan(Prabu) along his mother (Manorama) in a remote village. In, another village PVS family (peopled by Nadhiya, Vijayakumar and Nasser), And Heroine Banu (Banu) too. Both Saravanan & PVS family’s are Relatives sometime ago but Saravanan fondness for his sister (bharani’s mother) triggered conflict between Saravanan and his wife Sakunthala(Nadhiya), then they lived apart from each other. Without aware of the situation Bharani loves Banu vise versa. Bharani has right to marry Banu and he fights for his Murai Ponnu forms the rest of the story.
The story is not new to Kollywood, still Film Casts (Prabu, Nadhia, Nazzer) Acting are sure to attract peoples from all the sides, apart from that dialogue delivery and Comedy narration tried out by director really worked well. New face Banu, look similar like typical village girl. And music scored by Yuvan sounds Ok. Director narrated the whole story based on the characters, which minimized the story in long run.
Action, songs, sentiment & Love, a perfect Masala Movie cooked by the director is sure to taste the success.

Oviya while speaking to the media said,” My real name is Oviya. I was doing first year degree course in Trichur College. I was also looking out for chance. I did a small role in a Malayalam film.
The director who saw this gave me the opportunity for me to become Kazhavani’s lover. With regard to me talking Thanjavur Tamil, I was sent to Koothupattarai for training. I was also trained for acting. It was a great problem to speak this dialect.
Now people are appreciating me after seeing me on the screen. I feel like that I have got wings. With regard to glamour, I am donning a role of a beautiful village girl. Audience will see me as a girl from their own village.
Actress Oviya speaks about Kazhavani

Audience will not agree if I do glamour role if they see me in this film. There are talks that the chemistry between me and Vimal as worked out well. It is not so. I am upset by this kind news even before the release of my first film.
When there is no shooting, I will call the hero as Anna ( brother). Vimal, though he looks decent in his white dresses, is a real thief. That means fondest thief. That’s how he steals my heart in the film. Not in reality.”

Kalavani – Movie Review

Kalavani

Verdict: Best Entertainer of this season

Production: Nasir

Direction: Sargunam

Star-casts: Vimal, Oviya, Thiru Murugan, Saranya, Ilavarasu and others

Music: SS Kumaran

Camera: Om Prakash

Art: T. Santhanam

Stunts: Dhilip Subbarayan

Co-production: Zahir

Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar, A. Sargunam

Cool’ could be the right choice to describe ‘Kalavani’ in one word. Hardly the fact that the movie is directed by a debutant and there are no big stars in it would strike you, as you would be so glued to the film right from scene one.
In other words, ‘Kalavani’, directed by fresher Sargunam (a former associate of ‘Kireedam’ fame Vijay) is a light hearted film that comes across as a whiff of fresh air, throwing light on the sense and sensibility of human relationships.
The story is nothing new. It is about a boy and a girl from two different villages which are at loggerheads for years. Not just that, the girl has an elder brother too, who poses hurdles to the affair, a regular thing in most of the movies made in these parts.
But the treatment the director has given to the script and the way he narrated the story win all accolades. Aptly helping him is cinematography by Om Prakash and music by S S Kumaran (of ‘Poo’ fame), not to forget the support given by producer Nazir to make such a different venture.
Arikki (Vimal), a good for nothing youth, is pampered by his mother (Saranya), with his father (Ilavarasu) working in Dubai sending money for their survival. Arikki is the one who also does some harmless minor heists and makes marriage proposals to every girl he meets.
But things change when he falls for Maheswari (Oviya), a girl from a nearby village whose terms with Arikki’s place is not worth mentioning. The feud between the two villages is further fueled when one of Arikki’s friends crosses swords with Ilango (Thirumurugan), Maheswari’s brother.
How Arikki successfully crosses all hurdles and ties the knot to Maheswari is the rest of the story, which is told in a lively and unconventional way that could even make you to roll over the floor laughing.
For Vimal, it is an extension of his ‘Pasanga’ act and he does it with ease. Oviya fits well to the role of a village belle. The experience of Saranya and Ilavarasu is visible on screen while debutant Thirumurugan marks his presence. Ganja Karuppu as Panchayathu tickles the funny bone.
If you are ready to forget some loopholes which you rarely come across and game for a fun-filled ride, ‘Kalavani’ could be a wise choice to spend some quality time. For films like ‘Kalavani’ is not a regular happening in Tamil cinema....

Movie Review: What a director and what a debut! Imagine making a traffic cop on duty reach into his pocket and cough up money for a children's cricket match.

The visions such a scene unleashes in you are mind-blowing, but that is only a tiny part. The entire film moves along on a kind of screenplay that is smooth and unlaboured, while the dialogues, arriving with a minimum of fuss, are so laced with humour that you are constantly grinning. Above all, what makes the film's story work is the depth of characterisation the director is able to bring to the job. Clearly, he is one who understands the sense and sensibility behind human relationships. Not just between the lead characters but also among the disparate crew who don the roles of various family members.

There are many more brownie points for the director, who last assisted Vijay in 'Kreedom', but time to cut to the story. Basically a romance. The hero and heroine belonging to different villages are at loggerheads with each other and this spills over even to kids' cricket contests. But the feud is introduced rather late. Up front, you are treated to Arikki's (Vimal of 'Pasanga' fame) tangos with his mother (Saranya). He has trouble clearing Plus II, but has no problems getting her to part with a couple of hundred bucks to splurge on beer and stuff with his friends. She tries to secretly deposit the money sent by her husband (Ilavarasu) employed in Dubai, but no luck. Arikki stumbles upon it. When advised not to pamper him, Saranya rattles off about an astrologer's prediction, a line that is a refrain throughout the film. But in the scene where the father discovers the son's perfidy, she explains the rationale behind such a belief. Arikki is also not above lifting a sack of fertiliser belonging to the co-operative, and such other minor heists. Harmless scrapes include playing pranks on Panchayathu ('Ganja' Karrupu) and his wife. The scene where Arikki and four friends think up the scam of collecting funds for a cricket match from all the shop owners in Mannargudi. Arikki also has the habit of making every girl say, ' I will marry you,' even if she does not mean it. Until he falls in love with Maheshwari (Oviya) and badgers her to declare herself, which she does much later. The scene where a sloshed Arikki muscles into a cab only to realise his father is in the back seat is priceless.

By this time the feud between the villages is roiling thanks to one of Arikki's friends falling in love with Ilango's (debutant Thirumurugan) 'mora ponnu' and in a drunken spree the hero and his gang kidnap her. Ilango, in case you didn't figure out, is Maheshwari's brother. Maheshwari's wedding with another boy, the rescue attempt, her unconventional marriage to Arikki, and the climax are oh so ROFL.

And surprise, surprise, no big stars. SS Kumaran's background score is good, while Omprakash's camera seems to be everywhere, and knows what it should do. A complete entertainer.

Kalavani movie review
In simple terms, ‘Kalavani’ is a blatant revision of Bharathiraja’s yesteryear films based on villagers’ conflicts and guy-gal falling in love. However, Sargunam completely gets rid of the gloomy backdrops as such that of tragic climax and polishes ‘Kalavani’ with hilarious quotients that is more interesting at few parts.
Just as the title goes, the film is about one such funny-chiseler Arikki (Vimal), a guy about who even devil fears to bother for his scamming acts. Nothing makes him responsible as he leads his life fetching money from his mother (Saranya) and his father (Ilavarasu) living in Dubai. He comes across Maheshwari (Oviya) from the other village and falls in love with her. But an unexpected twist in the tale strikes when he comes to know that Maheshwari is none other younger sister of Ilango (Thiru Murugan), with whom he had locked horns before few years.
Rest of the film proceeds about Arikki’s smart moves of sorting out the issues and joining hands with Oviya…
Though Vimal’s characterization reminiscences about his delineation in previous ‘Pasanga’, nothing seems to be diminishing his efforts. In an unstrained manner, he keeps carrying out his performance with an ease. Newcomer Oviya suits well the role of village belle and her performance at few places is good. The film’s co-director Thiru Murugan has donned the baddie character that can be credited as a moderate effort. Nothing to say about Saranya and Ilavarasu as they’ve sleepwalked in their roles…
On the flip side, director Sargunam fails to project the nativity in a right manner. The reasoning behind the conflicts popping up between two villages looks like a silly one. Even at certain points where things that have to be projected substantially, the filmmaker diminishes those aspects. What was so impressive about the girl that urged protagonist to fall in love with her? After a very long time, it’s nice to see Ganja Karuppu in a better way. Watch out for the sequence where he’s blown out of waters on hearing the announcement that he has committed suicide as his wife got to know his illegal affair, which isn’t actually a truth.
Cinematographer Om Prakash seems to have been wildly inspired by those Hollywood classics as he sustains few shots and composes more frames with top-angles. Background score and songs by S.S. Kumar aren’t so appealing.
With a running length of approximately 2.5hrs, the film has possibilities to capture down south audiences while it may take some more time to engage the multiplex audiences.

Oviya

Kerala’s beauty Oviya who made her debut in the film Kalavani is now flooded with offers. Her original name was Helen and she named her name as Oviya for the sake of Tamil films. She has lived as a village girl in the film Kalavani. Not only has she become popular among the Tamil audience but also among the top film personalities. Lots of production houses are approaching her for her call sheet. But Oviya has said that she will act in films that has story like Kalavani. Now she has been signed for a film titled Sevanu which has Amaran in the lead role. Jeevan is directing this film. Oviya who donned the role of a village girl will be donning the role of a modern girl in Sevanu. Oviya says that this film will also be a hit and she plans to settle in Chennai itself.

Oviya born April 29, 1991 as Helen Nelson is an Indian model and film actress, who mainly works in the Tamil film industry. She rose to fame with the 2010 comedy film Kalavani.

In a somewhat shocking statement, actress Oviya said that the Malayalam movies are quite uninteresting and boring; only senior heroines are given their due respect.

Oviya gained recognition as an actress in the film Kalavani which has done well in the box office. This was also her debut Tamil movie. She says that she initially thought that she would be asked to play the role of a city girl; however, she was given the role of a village girl. She was a bit shaky with the role and to wear a half sari.

She adds that thanks to the director, she could enact the role so well. The director apparently taught her how to walk, talk, and laugh like a village damsel. The story also did astonish her and she was really encouraged later on. She says that Tamil movies are better than their Malayalam counterparts. In the latter, mostly the newcomers are shunned while the senior heroines are glorified further. Tamil films warmly welcome a variety of newcomers and fresh scripts..

Kalavani Oviya flooded with offers

Actress Oviya

Oviya has made a successful debut as heroine opposite Vimal of ‘Pasanga’ fame in the recently released ‘Kalavaani’, which has been directed by Sargunam and produced by Naseer, manager of actress Trisha.  The pretty-looking Oviya, who has already debuted in Malayalam films, feels that Malayalam films are quite boring when compared to Tamil films.

Oviya is excited that her first film has turned out to be not only successful at the box-office but has also won the critics’ hearts, thanks to the treatment of the script by Sargunam.  “Initially, I thought I would be offered an urban girl’s character and was shocked when I was asked to wear paavadai-dhaavani and act in a village belle’s role.

“I was quite stunned when Sargunam Sir narrated the entire story to me.  I felt fortunate enough to have been chosen to play the role I ultimately played in the film. The director taught me how to smile, how to talk, how to walk and all those little things which stood me in good stead throughout the entire movie’s shooting,” says Oviya.

When asked about the domination of Malayalee girls in Kollywood, Oviya says that while it’s a fact that more Malayalee actresses are in demand in Kollywood, the Malayalm industry respects only the senior artistes {be it male or female} and doesn’t seem to introduce many newcomers as is done in Kollywood.

“Tamil films are not like that; so many newcomers are debuting here quite frequently and tasting success as well.  This could be the reason for the exodus of Malayalee actresses.  Another reason is thatMalayalam films are basically quite boring with sleepy scripts.  Only in Tamil films, you get to watch films made in various backdrops and with challenging scripts,” says Oviya, not thinking twice to launch tirade against her own film industry.

She sure knows hot to catch others’ attention!!!!!

Vijay Kavalan Movie Review

Kavalan Review

January 16, 2011 by The Editor
Star Cast: Vijay, Asin, Raj Kiran, Roja, Vadivelu
Direction: Siddique
Production: C Romesh Babu
Music: Vidyasagar
Banner: Eka Veera Creations

Kaavalan’ is no doubt a different Vijay film. Yet, it is no different movie for it has got nothing big to offer but for Vijay’s terrific screen presence coupled with his neat performance and an emotional climax that comes with a twist.
Take away Vijay & Vadivelu (who provides relief in a few scenes), ‘Kaavalan’ could make you squirm on seats, courtesy an outdated script and age-old style of narration. A few compromises to the original version (Malayalam hit ‘Bodyguard’) to suit the image of Vijay too fails to work big time.

Kavalan Review
In other words, ‘Kavalan’ could be a classic example of how a potent knot could be diluted in the name of making it a ‘commercially viable’ product. One good sign is that Vijay coming forward to be part of a project which doesn’t portray him as a demigod.
Coming to the story, Bhoominathan (Vijay), a carefree youngster, is made by his father (‘Nizhalgal’ Ravi) to join the household of Muthuramalingam (Rajkiran), a don-turned-do gooder in a village near Madurai, as a bodyguard.
Kavalan Review
As there is a threat to the life of Muthuramalingam’s daughter Meera (Asin), he asks Bhoominathan to accompany her to the college and provide security cover. As Meera feels Bhoominathan’s presence as a disturbance, she plays a prank on him, despite a warning from her friend Maadhu (Mithra Kurian).
Slowly, Meera falls for the charm and good heart of Bhoominathan and all hell breaks loose when Muthuramalingam, who never allows anyone deceive him, comes to know about this. What follows is a dragging climax, which however is emotional and touching.
Kavalan Review
Vijay is the real one-man army who saves the film to a great extent. It is his charm and performance that work big time in ‘Kavalan’. Asin is good but her much talked about chemistry with Vijay (in ‘Sivakasi’ and ‘Pokkiri’) is missing.
Vadivelu as Amavasai provides comic relief on very few occasions. Mithra Kurian, Rajkiran, Roja, KK, M S Bhaskar and ‘Pithamagan’ Mahadevan have performed well, but only have little scope as it is Vijay’s show all the way.
Kavalan Review
Vidyasagar is back with ‘Kavalan’ and his background score is good. So are a couple of songs. Cinematography by Ekambaram and editing by Gowri Shankar add value to the end product.
The script has many loopholes for there are many unanswered questions. One good example is that why ‘Pithamagan’ Mahadevan, who challenges to kill Asin at any cost, vanishes all of a sudden.
Kavalan Review
Siddique is a director with a magic touch in Malayalam. And in Tamil too, we have enjoyed his movies, especially ‘Friends’ with the same Vijay. However, as far as ‘Kaavalan’ is concerned, we have to conclude the review with a dialogue oft-repeated by Vadivelu in the film - ‘Avarey confuse aayitaaru pola irukku...’

After recouping my health, I had acted in Mister Missus and Dabur Honey Ad films. Because of this I only got the opportunity to act in Ponnar Shankar.  They told me that this is a dream project of Kalaignar. I am donning the role of a princess. Ramya NambeesanRamya Nambeesan while speaking to the media said, “Though I have earlier acted in Tamil films, I feel that Illaignan is my first innings. The character is so powerful. Definitely my innings in Illaignan will be an important aspect in my cinema career.
Why are you not seen much in Tamil films? Why are you not using the opportunities at the time when there is dearth of heroines in Tamil cinema?
I did a good role in the film Raman Thediya Seethai, but all the roles I got after this were all stereo type roles. So I felt that I can keep quiet instead of acting in these which will spoil my name. It was worth waiting because I got the role in Illaignan and I am sure that this film will change the image about me. I will soon be in the top position in Tamil cinema.

A R Rahman will compose the music. The main role will be either Anbu Selvan or Raghavan. Every week there will be crime, murder and separate investigations episodes.
