Siruthai Movie Review

Movie Name: Siruthai
Cast: Karthi, Tamannah, Santhanam, Baby Rakshana, Rajiv Kanakala and Supreet
Director: Shiva
Producer: K. E. Gnanavel Raja
Music: Vidyasagar
Banner: Studio Green
Rating: 3/5

Tamil movie audiences are between Andhra and Kerala not orientating towards either. Siruthai is quaintly superficial but injustice cannot be done after hearty genuine laughs. Santhanam and Karthi create a hilarious combo although the script is deliberately silly for evoking laughter. For Santhanam, it is a different role from the routine but Karthi falls into it. Though he has tried out some difference, his comical antics look the same.
The first half smells like a pucca Telugu avakai while the second half is no exception. Silly comical sequences set the film onto some serious revelations (by the script not by experience). The script sets the mood for any sort of emotional proceedings. There is a popular human resource training method which begins with fun and frolic. By the time the trainees get into such a mood, the trainer switches gears for some serious personal introspection which they oblige to.
This is a universal method long followed in movies. Siruthai is a throwback to any of the MGR movies or its facsimile during the Telugu “double action” days. In Siruthai, Karthi is ‘Rocket Raja’, a pickpocket who uses his fingers a lot, as he tells Tamannah. The hip-cleavage-revealing lead lady falls head over heels with the thief assuming he is a software engineer. In comes, a 3 year old girl who calls Karthi, “Appa”. He happens to keep the child with him whom he takes care of after briefly finding her as a blighter.
This sets Tamannah part ways with Karthi. The real father of the child, the policeman Karthi as Rathnavel Pandian, shows up which leads to revelations of an enmity with the airhead but brutal villains in Andhra Pradesh. The flashback in the second half of Rathnavel Pandian is over the top with a policeman having to give away his own wife to the villains who rule the roost in the village.
Karthi fights and gets him his wife back. This leads to a rivalry where the villain brings his brutal brother to butcher Karthi. Rathnavel Pandian, the Policeman Karthi, is sculpted by Michelangelo. The iron man has liver made of steel that withstands searing bullets and backstabbing “knife-pokes”. His liver may be twisted by a knife and a bullet may hit his head. His brain chucks out the bullet on its own and keeps him alive.
The man who does not fear death, and smiles when he is dying, creates lumps on the throat of his colleagues, who always have something to swallow with tears, whenever Karthi finishes his dialogues. However, Karthi as Rathnavel Pandian dies (?!?) who must be impersonated by the Rocket Raja Karthi in true Billa style. Will Rocket Raja be able to take on the ruffians and win over them?
He does it with so much ease which Rathnavel Pandian could have learned from, before he died. In this comic caper, logic flies out of the window due to melodramatic, over the top histrionics trying too hard to impress. Velraj’s camera makes a perfect Telugu film with the vibrations derived from the loudness of the villains. Angles and lighting create an eerie effect than one of clarity. The only one who strikes the right chord after Karthi is Baby Rakshana, as the 3 year old Divya, looking much like Shamili in Anjali.
When Rocket Raja Karthi goes running to get back Divya, who is locked up by himself on a lorry, she asks him to continue playing the same game which is hilarious. It is this innocence that moves us when Karthi subjects her to his anger breaking her tape recorder on which she hears her mother’s song. Such scenes may have been seen any number of times but they still have the power to move the audience.
All said and done, we cannot downgrade a film which has made us laugh our hearts out, entertained us with the charming performances of its lead actors and comedian, though it feels all that ridiculous to our common sense. We cannot deny that we laughed or that we were entertained. Music by Vidyasagar is too much below average which you cannot say was composed by a popular music director. Velraj’s camera movements were pain in your eyes as in any Ram Gopal Varma’s film though adhering to the “intensity through camera” technique.
Director Siva may have not made a film with logic but he tried to make a hero and he did. While Karthi becomes an action hero in a rather lovable way, he puts behind all the ridiculousness of the film with his screen presence. Siruthai is as ridiculous as Thillalangadi except for the likeable screenplay and performances.
Positives
  • Karthi
  • Baby Rakshana
  • Santhanam
  • Entertaining
  • Humorous
Negatives
  • Smells Telugu Avakai
  • Over the top melodrama
  • Vidyasagar’s Music
  • Unjustifiable Scenes
  • Mindless Ridiculousness
Verdict
Despite all the mindlessness of the plot, Siruthai makes even the most critical of minds enjoy the film. The childishness of the film will be liked by children nevertheless. The stupid scenes are cleverly contrived to make the watching of the movie enjoyable. One wonders if audience must not find bad, abusive words as humor especially when Santhanam is around. When he can make us laugh, he too need not resort to bad words. Siruthai is a Pongal release for the holidays but empty seats on the second day did say something. Siruthai – Clever and Agile!

Siruthai Movie Story :

Rocket Raja is the character played by Karthi who is a pick pocketer along with his friend Kaatu Poochi played by Santhanam who cheat people to make their daily bread and butter. Even though Rocket Raja is a thief he is a kind of a person who is also good at heart. He loves Tamannah and plans to marry her, but life brings in another twist where a small girl enters his life calling him Daddy.

Rocket Raja gets shocked and confused when the small girl call him daddy. Added to this he gets the support of a police officer played by Rajiv Kanakala who comes in the rescue of Rocket Raja from that point of time.

A bunch of goons attack Rocket Raja and he turns utterly clueless as why the goons are behind him to kill him. The sudden appearance of IPS officer Rathnavel Pandian shocks Rocket Raja again.

Who this Rathnavel Pandian?
Who is this small girl?
What happens to Rathnavel Pandian?
Why are the goons behind Rocket Raja?
Will Rocket raj attain the love of Tamannah?

To know all these watch ‘Karthi`s ‘Siruthai’ on the Big screen

Karthi steals the show by carrying the movie on his shoulder with the excellent performance of dual characters as IPS Officer Rathnavel Pandian and Pick Pocketer. Kathi has bought in a new style as a cop and Rocket Raja is a fun filled character focussing to entertain both the mass and class crowds.

Tamannah`s performance is also worth speaking who has given splendid performance while interacting with the mass character and the magic is played again between Karthi & Tamannah especially in the romantic scenes. Baby Rakshana played her role superbly and the Villian Supreet excelled in his role. Rajiv Kanakala has really done justice to his character with perfect dailogue delivery. Santhanam`s character as usual is excellent in taking the comedy track in his own style and promises to make you laugh throughout the movie

The powerful dailogues of Rathnavel Pandian giving definition about ‘fear’ is awesome

Comedy track of Karthi & Santhanam is enjoybale and hilarious

‘Siruthai’ is a mix of action, comedy, sentiment, romance, glamour and good script ready to entertain your whole family for the loooooooong weekend of Pongal!!!!!!!!
